Rani Rerolling Mills (RRM), a leading manufacturer of steel products in the country, has introduced green technology in its production lines, company officials said on Tuesday.
The green technology known as Direct Hot Rolling (DHR) technology is being utilised by the RRM for the first time in Bangladesh, in producing Thermo Mechanically Treated (TMT) steel bars.
The information was revealed at a press conference held at the Jatiya Press Club on the day. The company claimed that the new TMT bars being manufactured by the company can be termed as the ‘Green Steel’, because the DHR technology does not need re-heating process to melt core iron.
Prof Ahmed Sharif, Department Head of Materials and Metallurgical department at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, was chief guest at the event.
Prof Sharif said: “The DHR technology is very environment friendly. There is no risk of carbon emission from production plant here. Around 20 plants are producing TMT bars in Bangladesh. We hope, all of them will introduce the carbon free technology in respective plants.”
RRM Chairman Sumon Chowdhury said, “We have adopted the technology to avoid traditional re-heating furnace, which reduces the dependence on natural gas. So the gas is being saved for the technology. As there is no burning of gas in this process, the emission of carbon dioxide is lowered here. So the technology is environment friendly saving earth from green-house effect. At this point we termed the TMT as Green Steel”
RRM Managing Director Saiful Islam Shuvo, Chief Executive Sanjoy Kumer and Head of Business Development Mahmud Alam were present at the programme among others.
